Over time, ECOTIC has focused both on improving awareness in regards to the correct methods of disposing of electric waste and on facilitating citizens’ access to collection points.
In this context, on the International Day for the Recycling of Electronic Waste, ECOTIC launched the national telephone line 021 9641 addressed to citizens who want to know how to dispose of electric and electronic waste (WEEE). The initiative is part of the national awareness campaign regarding the separate collection of WEEE – “Act in Romania like abroad”, organized in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests and comes to the aid of citizens by providing them with a specific telephone number where they can find out how and where to dispose of e-Waste.
In the brief time since its launch, the national number registered more than 800 calls from Romanians interested in finding more information about electric waste. The great majority of the callers were interested in the correct methods of disposal and the location of collection points throughout Romania. Likewise, Romanians were interested in placing pick up orders for their bulky electric waste.
According to a 2019 ECOTIC study, a Romanian household generates, on average, 8.3 kg of WEEE annually, of which only 3 kg end up in the recycling stream, the rest are thrown away with other waste, handed over to metal collectors or thrown randomly in nature. In this context, it is important for citizens to have reliable sources of information and collection points where they can hand over this type of waste.
How can a citizen dispose of WEEE?
- 1 to 1 exchange: when purchasing new equipment can hand over similar old equipment.
- Collection points / centers: collection points dedicated to electrical waste can be found everywhere, especially in retail stores. The map featuring ECOTIC’s collection points is available at www.ecotic.ro/puncte-de-colectare
- Pick up from home: ECOTIC can ensure the takeover of bulky equipment.
