ECOTIC celebrates two decades of activity in the management of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), as well as in promoting the transition to the circular economy in Romania.
Established in April 2006, ECOTIC was the first organization in Romania to implement extended producer responsibility, actively contributing to the development of an efficient system for the collection, recycling and reuse of WEEE.
In the 20 years of activity, ECOTIC results reflects a significant impact at the national level:
- Over 500 000 tons of waste electrical and electronic equipment collected – an impressive amount, equivalent to double the volume Palace of Parliament.
- Over 420 000 tons of secondary raw materialsreintroduced into the circular economy
- 38,000 pieces of equipmentprepared for reuse and donated through partnership with Workshops Without Borders,thus contributing to the provision of approximately 30% of educational institutions in Romania
- Developing an extensive network of 12 770 WEEE and DBA collection points
- Organizing over 2000 awareness and information campaigns including the eco-education program Ecoterrian School and ECOTIC Caravan who brought environmental education closer to communities
- The organization of 17 editions of the Clean Environment Awards Gala, a landmark event for recognizing performance in environmental protection
Over time, ECOTIC has developed partnerships with environmental authorities, companies and organizations, NGOs contributing to raising awareness among the population and improving the collection infrastructure at the national level.
In its 20 years of activity, ECOTIC has built and consolidated a solid partnership with manufacturers of electrical and electronic equipment, which represents an essential pillar in the development of an efficient waste management system in Romania. Since its establishment, the organization has acted as a collaboration platform between industry, authorities and society, facilitating the implementation of extended producer responsibility in a coherent and sustainable way.
Today, ECOTIC brings together over 800 affiliated producers, which also contributes to the development of infrastructure and the information of the population. Through this partnership, collection networks were created and expanded, efficient logistics solutions were implemented, contributing to the development of the entire sector.
ECOTIC's involvement in the development of the WEEE field goes beyond its operational role. The organization has played an active role in shaping the legislative framework and aligning Romania with European standards, providing expertise and institutional support in the regulatory process.
In parallel, through information campaigns and educational projects, ECOTIC contributes to raising awareness about the importance of separate waste collection and recycling and to changing consumer behavior in the transition to the circular economy.
Looking to the future, ECOTIC aims to accelerate the transition to a functional circular economy in Romania, by expanding the collection infrastructure, supporting reuse and continuing eco-education projects.
In a context in which material resources are becoming increasingly valuable, collaboration between producers, authorities, collection and recycling operators and consumers remains essential, and ECOTIC reaffirms its commitment to being an active partner in building a sustainable system, adapted to the challenges of the future.
