ECOTIC's contribution in the Circular Economy

From responsibility to results

Foreword

ECOTIC

The 2024 retrospective takes a unique approach, offering an insight into our key activities that contribute to the transition towards a circular economy.

Since 2007, ECOTIC has been both a leader in the management of electrical and electronic waste and a key player in the development of the circular economy in Romania, contributing through the collection and recycling of WEEE to the recovery and valorization of secondary raw materials.

By recycling WEEE according to European standards, ECOTIC contributed to the recovery of 219.599 tons of iron, 64.000 tons of plastic, 31.986 tons of glass CRT, 12.566 tons of aluminum, 8.275 tons of copper, 7.777 tons of integrated circuit boards.

At the same time, ECOTIC is also involved in another aspect of the circular economy: the reconditioning and reuse of used IT equipment, an activity carried out together with our partners from Ateliere fără Frontiere. The collaboration with AFF led to the reconditioning of approximately 35.000 electronic equipment (laptops, tablets, screens, printers) which were then donated to rural schools and disadvantaged communities.

A constant focus is the development of our own collection infrastructure for waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and waste batteries and accumulators (WBA). Today, this consists of a network of 13.700 publicly accessible collection points for WEEE and WBA.

At the same time, over the years, ECOTIC has carried out 1800 information and awareness campaigns to promote environmentally responsible behavior and the efficient use of material resources.

Another component of our activity is the participation in European projects dedicated to the circular economy. Among these, we highlight: ECOSWEEE, project carried out in 2024 in 11 EU countries, which aimed to test small-scale WEEE collection strategies and stimulate consumers to hand over this equipment, as well as Steps for Urban Mining, project that provided transfer of Norwegian know-how and expertise in waste management to operators of Voluntary Collection Centers (CAV) funded through PNRR.

We appreciate the constant support provided by producers, authorities, collection and recycling partners, and consumers in achieving the objectives of the circular economy, with direct benefits for the environment, economy, and society.
